Australia is an island continent and the majority of the population lives along the eastern coastline. Australia's culture is predominately a beach culture, which is why we win a lot of medals for swimming at the Olympics. Australians like to spend so much time at the beach that having a dark suntan is considered beautiful.

This may seem to be a good life but there are many dangers when swimming at the beach. |
Around Australia's coast line are many Great White sharks. They don't want to eat people, they just mistake them for other animals such as seals. Many surfers have been attacked because the shark hunts below and, when it looks up it sees a shape that looks like a seal. Click here to watch a video about great white sharks.

A riptide is a kind of water that returns back to the ocean very quickly. In the picture on the left, the dark blue water is the riptide. If a swimmer gets caught he/she will be dragged out to the ocean. At a beach there are usually two flags to tell people where it is safe to swim. An Australian prime minister once was caught in a rip and drowned.

Jellyfish are dangerous because of their tentacles, which have venom that will sting you. Some people use vinegar to stop the stinging of jellyfish.

As Australians love to spend so much time under the hot sun trying to get a suntan, they end up getting sunburned. This leads to skin cancer and some moles on the skin are prone to becoming cancerous.

Many years ago, swim suits covered the entire body because it was considered indecent. Things changed due to swimming contests - the less you wore, the faster you could swim. |

Cosi |
This is Australian slang for swimsuit, "cosi" is short for "costume." In the old days people used to say "swimming costume," but Australians like to shorten words so that is why they say "cosi." |
Australians learn to swim at such an early age even before they can walk. |
Many people like to spend their summer holidays at the beach but won't stay in a hotel. They prefer to stay in a caravan. |
In spite of risking skin cancer, women will lay under the sun to darken their skin. |

The most common food eaten on the beach is fish and chips. |
Eating fish and chips will attract seabirds called seagulls. There are many of these birds and they will follow you to get food. |
