In the beginning, Valentine's Day had nothing to do with love, many early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. |
What is a martyr? |

February 14th was a day to celebrate two Valentines, Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. |
In Greek culture, February was a time to celebrate the god Zeus and the goddess Hera's marriage. |

In Roman and Greek culture, February was a season for love, and fertility. So they would pray and honour goddesses. |

The link between Valentine's Day and romance came roughly during the fourteenth century. |

The famous English writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, wrote:
"For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make." |
For this was on Saint Valentine's Day - when every bird comes there to chase his mate. |
This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. |
From then onwards, Valentine's Day has been associated with love, and not many people know that it originally was about martyrs. |
